Physical Infrastructure Retreat - 29.May.09
Written by Doug Fountain

UCU's new Physical Infrastructure and Preservation committee had a full day 'master planning retreat.'

This retreat was scheduled to update our thinking about major planning on the UCU Main Campus in Mukono - where the next generation of buildings will go, how students and staff will access parts of the campus, etc.

Doug facilitated the retreat.  It was chaired by Dr. Senyonyi, and attended by Prof. Noll plus our projects manager, estates, engineers and others.  The session reviewed maps and plans and made financial projections of campus utilization.

It was  highly productive!  Now Doug is working with an infrastructure team to plan water, sewage, electricity, and telecommunications access.  Next step will be to give all this to a qualified architect in Uganda to review and fit together.

We concluded that on average over 5,500 people are on campus on any given day.  We demarkated the 'zones' for student life, classes, administration, academic offices, 'green' zones, and even an 'event' area for hosting functions.    We identified the need to complete the library, science labs, a new worship center/amphitheater, administration blocks for senior managers as well as student affairs, a student union building, sports hall, more dormitories, and paths for students to walk, and good parking.

One frequent comment from our visitors - 'every time I come, there is a new building, a new development, some where.'  Indeed, we suspect that impression is not soon to subside!
